With Open Source there is the option that the code can be forked meaning that a person or group of people can take the open source code and start their own project make changes and modifications as they see fit although this is quite rare there are quite a few examples (Joomla was a fork of Mambo, LedgerSMB was a fork of SQL-ledger and vtiger was a fork or SugarCRM.
